Ableton Advanced Users Meeting - Thursday in NYC w/AfroDJMac

AfroDJMac Discusses Routing Live Instruments for Live Performance and Looping in Ableton Live at Advanced Users Meetup

I am very excited to be a presenter at the Ableton Advanced Users Meetup in New York City on November 1st.  The event is hosted by Shocklee and  will take place at Tekserve on 119 W. 23rd St [6th & 7th Ave].  It is free to attend and features a host of amazing presenters.

Here's  what Shocklee has to say about the night:

AfroDJMac → Known in the Ableton community for his series of free downloads and tutorials, and featured numerous times in our own #FREESAMPLEFRIDAY’S AfroDJMac will be discussing the routing of live and virtual instruments, as well as vocals, into his Ableton set up, where they can all be effected and quickly recorded into tracks for live looping. He will demonstrate various routing and live looping techniques and show the principles of a fast and effective workflow that other users can apply to their own rigs.

Brian Jackson → Brian will demystify the “Formants” parameter in Vocoder and the Complex Pro Warp Mode. Formants are especially important when transposing the human voice, so creative vocal processing is given center stage in this demonstration – from useful background vocals to sci-fi alien voice design. Brian has more that 12 of years of experience as a mixing and mastering engineer. One of the first Ableton Certified Trainers, Brian is Co-Founder and Director Of Education at Devotion Gallery, Brooklyn.

Ethan Hein → Ethan Hein will demo some specific techniques in the context of music teaching rather than production such as teaching composition using Session Mode and music theory using the Fold function in the MIDI sequencer. He will also show how to teach warping a song out, extracting loops, pitch-shifting and discuss the legalities of sampling and mashups. A graduate student in Music Technology at NYU, Ethan’s writings about sample culture have appeared in news outlets, college courses and all around the internet.

Ben Casey → Ben will give a demo of Automation, Clip envelopes and Dummy clips in Ableton Live and show how you can use these to give your music movement. Ben is an Ableton Live ninja whose passion for electronic music landed him in London, where he helped launch the label Werk Discs and earned a Masters in music composition from Goldsmiths College. He is currently based in NYC where he teaches several classes and seminars at Tekserve, including “Introduction to Ableton,” “Digital DJing,” and “Live Looping.” He is a regular contributor to the music tech blog Bangbang-nyc.com.

Thomas Piper → Thomas will be demonstrating how to use Ableton for a one-man [or woman] show. He will be using Ableton, Max for Live and Arena and showing how to best control your background vocals and music simultaneously and show how to implement live clip chopper, a Max for Live plugin to manipulate audio. Along with this he will also be showing how to use Arena to control visuals during performance.

D.V.S* → D.V.S* [aka Derek VanScoten] is a Brooklyn based producer and guitarist who will be displaying how he performs with his guitar during his live performances. Utilizing hand and foot controllers, live mixing, looping and dummy clips. D.V.S* tours nationally as a live EDM artist, and has released music on 1320 Records, Pretty Lights Music, Electronic Musician Magazine among others.

DJ Juice E → Rocking the 1′s & 2′s during the night and in between presentations will be Brooklyn’s very own DJ Juice E, a DJ and Engineer at her own Piecemasters Studio who has rocked crowds at New York venues such as The Habana Outpost, Tillman’s, Deity, Sutra, Madame X and Fluid. She’s also worked behind the boards at studios such as Dark World, Millennium Sound, First Born, Sigma Sound and TME. You can expect fresh mixes, rare grooves and more.

Amazing and Inspiring Ableton and Production Discussions a Guarantee

I was fortunate enough to attend the last meeting and witnessed amazing presentations from DJ Rupture, Ben Casey, Exit Music, Brian Jackson, and Adriano Clemente.

I really admire and respect the work of the presenters, so it's a true honor to be one of them.  If you are in the neighborhood, come down! I aim to leave everyone with some practical ideas they can use in their own music.  And if you can't be there physically, there will be a live stream over at Shocklee.
