Casio CZ-1 Phase Distortion
Phase Distortion Synthesis uses waveforms to modulated other waveforms in a manner similar but a bit different from Frequency Modulation Synthesis. The result is the sound of the Casio CZ series, a very 1980’s sound producers still enjoy to this day.

Sampling the Casio CZ-1
I knew I wanted to sample the CZ-1 right away. The sounds are great, ranging from cheesy and a little too 80s to modern and space age.
I captured all 64 presets by sampling 9 notes across the keyboard at 3 different velocities for each preset. There are a total of 1,728 samples ensuring an accurate representation of the CZ-1.
Quickly select a CZ-1 preset and customize it with the Macro Controls. Choose a Macro Preset to instantly transform each preset!
Combining the CZ-1 with the Power of Ableton Live
Once I had all of my samples, I built them into Ableton Live Instrument Racks.
The first Macro Control allows you to cycle through the presets of the CZ-1. From there you can further sculpt the sounds using filters, amplitude envelops, arpeggiators, and more. The Timbre control changes how the samples are spread across the keyboard, which results in a variety of tones and textures for each preset.
I also include Macros for the Frequency Modulation feature of Sampler. This allows you to combine the CZ-1’s Phase Distortion sound with its FM cousin.
The 64 presets are organized by Sustained sounds and Plucked sounds. Quickly find the sound you need for your next track!
