The Analog Drums Ableton Live Pack contains 489 drum samples run through the warm and sonically rich filter of the Moog Sub Phatty analog synthesizer. When you need drums with grit and character, this collection is for you! The original samples come from a wide range of sources including classic drum machines (C78, 606, 707, 808, 909, Linn), Teenage Engineering's OP-1 Drum synthesizers, vinyl records, and various analog and virtual synthesizers. The samples were recorded back into Ableton Live and organized into 20 unique drum racks. Each drum rack has macro knobs that allows you to add effects over the entire kit, plus you can also manipulate and sculpt each drum individually. That means that these 20 drum racks have a whole universe of sound design potential.
The Charm and Character of a Good Analog Filter
One of my favorite techniques for adding character to my sounds is to run it through the filter of an analog synthesizer. Try as you might to emulate it in the digital world, but nothing quite captures the sound of a great analog filter. Among my favorites is the Moog Sub Phatty's filter. It's got all the charm and warmth you would expect from a Moog, with something extra special: the MultiDrive control. The MultiDrive adds anything from a warm tube-saturation sound to hard aggressive clipping. To me, it's the heart of the Sub Phatty's characteristic tone. So I decided to run a bunch of drum samples through it.

Nearly 500 Drum Samples Run Through the Overdriven Filter
I spent the better part of the month synthesizing, sampling and sculpting a large collection of drum samples. Everything from the Korg MS-20, Soulsby Atmegatron, Teenage Engineering OP-1, virtual instruments in Ableton Live and Max for Live, to vinyl records and classic vintage drum machines were used to create 489 drum sounds. I then took each sample and ran it through the Sub Phatty's circuitry and overdriven filter. Those samples were recorded back into Ableton Live using a high-end Apogee interface.

The resulting sounds are big and gritty, just what I was looking for. It's amazing what running your sounds through some external gear will do to them. Next came the tedious work of trimming each sample and naming them. Finally I organized the different sounds into 20 Ableton Live Drum Racks.

The Drum Racks offer FX for the entire kit and tweaks on the individual drum samples.
The fun part was putting these lovely samples into Live's Drum Racks and playing with them. There are full kits, racks organized by drum type, and also a special drum selector rack. I set up the Drum racks to have effects you can place over the entire kit (Filtering, Glue Compression, Bit Crush, Delay, etc.). Each drum also has its own set of controls that will allow you to adjust their relative volumes, pan, and pitch. You could take any given rack and alter the pitches of each drum to create entirely new sounds. There's a lot of sound design and morphing possibilities.
The Drum Selector lets you create patterns and audition different samples on the fly. Each one of those samples can then be changed dramatically. Unlimited sound design potential!
